About
"I love what I do because I have the opportunity to help people work through issues and concerns in ways they have never thought of before - I am seen as a Professional Listener, sharing insight and caring along the way."
- Brian Oltman, Psy.D., LMFT
Background
For me, therapy is the process of "Inner Work" becoming "Outer Movement" finding solutions to issues in ways which have never been considered before. "Aha Moments" can empower people to grow and live in new ways. I use an approach that is caring and encouraging. I am dedicated to helping clients discover their potential as human beings through the integration of mind, body & spirit.
I am a Licensed Therapist and offer psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, families, and adolescents. I earned my Psy.D., in Marriage & Family Therapy from Ryokan College and my MA in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University – both located in Los Angeles. In addition to my degrees in Clinical/Counseling Psychology, I hold a Master’s Degree in Philosophy/Theology from WTS, Dubuque, IA. I have also worked as a therapist with the Adult Intensive Outpatient Program at Sharp Mesa Vista Psychiatric Hospital for fourteen years and have extensive experience with chronic mental illness.
I served as the President of the San Diego Chapter of CA Marriage & Family Therapists, from 2006-09. I am currently a clinical member of the State CAMFT Organization and AAMFT - American Association of Marriage & Family Therapists. In San Diego, I am a member of the Greater San Diego Business Association (GSDBA).
My philosophy and therapeutic orientation are an integration of a variety of counseling theories: Mindfulness-Based counseling processes including, but not limited to: Client Centered Humanistic-Existential, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psycho-dynamic, Spiritual Counseling, New Narrative, etc. These methods, as well as others are used as the basis for counseling to promote and encourage growth through increased self-awareness, enhanced relationships, expression of feelings, purposeful living, effective communication, conflict resolution and spiritual growth.
My therapeutic focus includes: relationships & intimacy, men's issues, depression, anxiety, crisis intervention, post-traumatic stress, anger management, thought disorder, spirituality, chronic illness, terminal disease, bereavement, LGBT issues, HIV/AIDS, life & career transitions, communication, managing stress, time mastery, setting and maintaining priorities, etc.
